COMET Co-Director, Professor Juliet Biggs, named a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU)

25th September 2026

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) has announced its 2026 Class of Fellows this week, with COMET’s Juliet Biggs amongst the honorees!

Professor Juliet Biggs (University of Bristol), a volcanologist and geophysicist whose research has helped scientists better understand volcanic unrest and assess risks in some of the world’s most dynamic regions, is being recognised for her use of satellite observations to monitor and study geological hazards around the world.

The AGU Fellows programme recognises members who have made exceptional contributions to Earth and space science through breakthrough discoveries, innovations and sustained scientific impact. Fellows are recognised as leading experts in their fields and may be called upon to provide independent scientific advice to governments, agencies and organisations beyond the scientific community.

To be elected an AGU Fellow, nominees must demonstrate scientific excellence through achievements such as major discoveries, innovative advances in science, instrumentation, data or methods development, or a sustained record of influential research. Fellows are also expected to demonstrate leadership that reflects AGU’s values, including a commitment to integrity, equity, diversity, open science, mentoring and public engagement.

The 2026 AGU Fellows will be celebrated at the AGU Conference in San Francisco in December.

Congratulations, Juliet!
