In Ezzane Volcanic Field

Observations of Deformation

Volcano number:225003
Region:
Country:Algeria-Niger
Geodetic measurements?No
Measurement method(s):No measurements
Characteristics of deformation:

The In Ezzane volcanic province: Straddling the Algeria – Niger border, a 500-km2 plateau is made up of a stacking of 5 to 10 m-thick olivine basanite flood lavas overlying Ordovician Tassili sandstones. Strom- bolian cones fed the flood lavas. An uppermost lava flow yields a 2.01 ± 0.05 Ma (Gelasian) K-Ar age. The basal surface on which lavas have flowed is only slight- ly reddened, pointing to aerial eruptions in fairly dry environment (Bonin et al., 2011)
