Laguna del Maule

Observations of Deformation

Volcano number:357061
Region:
Country:Chile
Geodetic measurements?Yes
Deformation observation?Yes
Measurement method(s):InSAR, GPS - continuous, GPS - campaign
Duration of observation:2003-2015 (InSAR), 2012-2015 (GPS)
Inferred cause(s) of deformation:Magmatic
Characteristics of deformation:

There was no measured deformation at Laguna del Maule in an Envisat interferogram from 2003 – 2004 (Le Mével et al., 2015). At some time between 2004 and 2007, the volcano began rapidly uplifting, with an average peak uplift rate of 20 to 30 cm/year between 2007 and 2015 (Le Mével et al., 2015). The deformation has been modelled by the injection of magma into a pre-existing reservoir at 4.5 km depth (Le Mével et al., 2016).
