No geodetic studies have even been published on Rungwe volcano, which is the largest volcano in the Karonga basin. The volcano has a 4 km wide caldera, and basaltic cones can be found to the NW of the volcano. It is thought that there were explosive and effusive eruptions during the Holocene, the most recent of which possiblly 1200 years ago.
