Sumbing was one of several volcanoes covered by Philibosian & Simon’s 2007-2008 interferometric SAR study of the island of Java. A time series of the collected deformation data reveals a fluctuating trend of displacement, between +5 and -10cm from the edifice’s original position in January 2007. The net result is slight subsidence, totalling less than 5cm. As the volcano has not been magmatically active 1730, it is unlikely that the deflation is magmatic in origin; the small and unsteady signal makes it more likely that the subsidence is a result of natural erosion.
