Earthquake intensity

Earthquake intensity

25th April 2025

Earthquake intensity measures the effects and severity of an earthquake at specific locations on the Earth’s surface. It reflects the degree of shaking and damage experienced at various places, rather than the earthquake’s overall size or energy release.

Measurement Scales

  1. Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) Scale: One of the most commonly used scales for measuring earthquake intensity. It has 12 levels, ranging from I (not felt) to XII (total destruction). Each level describes the observable effects on people, buildings, and the natural environment.
  1. Other Scales: Other intensity scales include the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS) and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) scale, which are used in different regions.
