Ben Esse is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Manchester. Ben uses satellite imagery to measure volcanic degassing, focusing on the emissions of SO2. Ben first joined COMET as a PhD student in 2016 and became a COMET Scientist in 2024.

Ben finished a PhD in 2021 from the University of Manchester studying ground-based UV remote sensing of volcanic plumes. He stayed on at Manchester as a PDRA, switching to satellite Earth Observation. Ben works closely with various volcano observatories, including in Italy, Iceland and in Montserrat, as well as with the UK Met Office to help monitor volcanic gas emissions globally.
