Ekbal Hussain is a geohazard researcher at the British Geological Survey (BGS). His research focuses on the use of satellite imagery to understand earth processes, particularly those related to natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides and subsidence. Ekbal’s relationship with COMET began as a PhD student at the University of Leeds in 2012. He is now a COMET Scientist.

After completing his PhD in 2016 and a short 1-year postdoc also at Leeds, he moved to the BGS where he has been since 2018. He led the Multi-Hazard Systems topic area at the BGS between 2021 and 2023. Since January 2025 he serves on the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Science Committee, which advises NERC Council on strategic priorities and funding for environmental science research. Ekbal is an advocate for holistic multi-hazard approaches to understanding and managing the impact of disasters to society.
