COMET Associate: Earth Observation
British Geological Survey

Area of expertise: InSAR, machine learning, geohazard monitoring

Holly Hourston is an Earth Observation scientist at the British Geological Survey. She is a COMET Associate Scientist and the Early Careers Officer for the Geological Remote Sensing Group committee.

Hourston graduated in 2022 from the University of Glasgow with an MSci in Astronomy and Physics. Her undergraduate thesis focussed on Bayesian modelling of future gravitational wave observations. She stayed at Glasgow to undertake an MSc (Research) in Geology, where she studied the organic matter content of meteorites. In her role at BGS, she analyses Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar data to study ground deformations due to various geological influences, and is developing machine learning algorithms and statistical approaches to automate geological interpretations of InSAR data
