John Elliott

COMET Scientist: Earthquakes and Tectonics, Earth Observation
University of Leeds

Areas of Expertise: Earth Observation; Active Tectonics; Earthquakes; Remote Sensing; Satellite Radar; Faulting; Mountain Building; Seismic Hazard

Associated Projects:

John Elliott is a Professor at the University of Leeds. His main interest lies in the measurement of surface deformation associated with the accumulation and release of strain in the earthquake cycle. He aims to help improve our understanding of the nature of continental faulting and assessment of seismic hazard. He uses the satellite based geodetic technique of radar interferometry (InSAR) along with optical data to study active tectonic processes.

John joined COMET as a PhD student in 2005, and is now a COMET Scientist. John completed a PhD in 2010 at the University of Oxford, where he stayed on as a post-doctoral researcher before taking up a Royal Society Fellowship at the University of Leeds in 2016. John works closely with collaborators around the world, including in New Zealand, Kyrgyzstan and in particular China.
