Luke Bateson is the Head of Shallow Geohazards and Earth Observation at BGS where he leads scientists in the Geodesy and Remote Sensing, Engineering Geology, Environmental and Engineering Geophysics and Coastal teams. Luke sits on the COMET executive committee as the BGS representative and is also a COMET scientist.

Luke has spent 24 years researching the use of InSAR to detect and monitor geohazards, in particular he has focused on subsidence related to coal mining in the UK and collaborates with international colleagues to understand the contribution of vertical land motion to sea level change. Having established standardised data integration and interpretation routines to generate geohazard information used by 27 European Geological Surveys Luke now leads efforts to develop automatic InSAR interpretation routines.
