Peter Clarke

COMET Associate: Earth Observation and Volcanoes
University of Newcastle

Areas of Expertise: GNSS geodesy

Peter Clarke is professor in the Geospatial Engineering group, School of Engineering, Newcastle University.  He uses satellite geodesy, mainly precise GNSS positioning, to study the rheology of the Earth by observing the planet’s deformational response to excitations caused by surface mass loads (e.g. ocean tides, ice sheet changes) and earthquakes.  He also works on the development of stable global reference frames using GNSS, and the application of GNSS estimates of tropospheric and ionospheric conditions to InSAR and meteorology.

Clarke completed his DPhil on Aegean tectonics at the University of Oxford in 1997, and after post-doctoral research there took up a lectureship at Newcastle in 1998.  He has enjoyed fieldwork and collaboration all around the world.
