Sami Samiei Esfahany

COMET Research Staff: InSAR Scientist and Facility Manager
University of Leeds

Areas of Expertise: InSAR methodologies; Tectonic geodesy; Estimation Theory and Inverse Problems; Geostatistics

Associated Projects: COMET-LiCSAR

Sami Samiei Esfahany joined the University of Leeds in May 2025 as an InSAR scientist and facility manager at the Institute of Geophysics and Tectonics. He previously served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Tehran (2017–2025). He holds a PhD in Geodesy from Delft University of Technology, specializing in satellite radar interferometry (InSAR).

Sami’s research focuses on tectonic geodesy, combining advanced InSAR methodologies with geomodelling and inverse problem approaches to investigate crustal deformation processes such as fault slip, land subsidence, and volcanic activity. He has contributed to several national and international projects in the Netherlands and Iran on subsidence, infrastructure stability, and tectonic hazard assessment.

At Leeds, alongside his research activities, Sami manages the LiCSAR automatic InSAR monitoring system and is actively involved in its development and maintenance, supporting large-scale and near-real-time deformation studies worldwide. Sami also has extensive teaching experience in geodesy, geodynamics, estimation theory, and InSAR.
