Sandra Piazolo uses field observations, microstructural analysis combined with numerical modelling and physical experiments to understand the deformation behaviour of rocks through time and space. Sandra is particularly interested in the dynamic interplay between brittle – ductile deformation and fluid -rock interaction.

After her PhD at the University of Mainz, Germany, she held post-doctoral positions at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland and University of Liverpool. She took up a lectureship/professorship at the University of Stockholm in 2005. Sandra moved in 2010 to Macquarie University (Australia) where she held a Future Fellowship on the rheology of the lower crust. She joined the University of Leeds in 2017.
