Stephen Hicks

COMET Associate: Earthquakes
UCL

Areas of Expertise: Fault Mechanics, Tectonics and Earthquakes

Stephen Hicks is interested in tackling high-impact scientific problems in geophysics and seismology, from deciphering earthquake rupture processes, to imaging tectonic plate boundaries, and monitoring critical changes to Earth’s surface environment using seismology. At UCL, Stephen is a Proleptic Lecturer in Environmental Seismology.

Stephen has been awarded a distinguished NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) Independent Research Fellowship, which started in February 2025. His research project will explore: What controls coupling and seismogenic potential along faults?

In 2024, Hicks was awarded the prestigious European Geoscience Union’s (EGU) 2024 Seismology Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Prize for his exceptional contributions to seismology, including innovative seismic imaging techniques, studies of earthquake processes as well as Earth structure, science communication and community building.
