University of Bristol

Areas of Expertise: Statistical Seismology, Earthquake Forecasting, Slow and Fast Earthquakes, Subduction Zones

Associated Projects: Decoding the messages between slow and fast earthquakes in subduction zones

Toño Bayona is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Bristol (UoB). He combines statistical and physics-based methods to forecast slow and “fast” earthquakes in subduction zones, which he then compares against future observations. Toño also serves as a code developer for the Collaboratory of the Study of Earthquake Predictability (CSEP), as well as a postdoctoral representative on the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee in the UoB School of Earth Sciences.

Toño completed a PhD in 2021 at the German Research Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam. Following his PhD, he held a post-doctoral position at UoB before obtaining a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship. Toño works closely with collaborators around the world, including Mexico, the US, and Italy
