Vision
To be a trusted centre of excellence in volcanic and earthquake science, combining expertise in observations and hazard modelling to deliver accessible data and advice for global risk reduction and resilience.
Mission
COMET’s overarching scientific mission is to reduce disaster risk and support event response by (1) providing and developing long-term Earth Observation services, (2) improving quantification of the distribution of seismic hazard in space and time, and (3) advancing understanding of the behaviour and hazards of magmatic systems and earthquakes.
To do this, we will:
1. Define the cutting edge in Earth Observation, providing state-of-the-art data sets (global and multi-decadal in scale) to underpin new scientific insights and decision making.
2. Maintain a strong community of practice in the UK and develop collaborative links with the global scientific and hazard monitoring community.
3. Develop and train the next generation of Earth Observation and Earth Science specialists to drive novel, world-leading research.
4. Invest in scientific excellence and commit to openness, integrity and accessibility.
5. Contribute to and advise on the development of Earth Observation satellite missions.
6. Build and maintain long-term relationships with governments/policymakers, local partners, industry and specialists.
7. Effectively communicate our research, findings and advice with non-academic audiences to ensure our science has impact outside of the academic community, and remain a trusted, expert source of information.
8. Advance the culture of diversity, inclusivity and environmental responsibility in COMET science.
