Samantha Engwell is a senior volcanologist at the British Geological Survey. Sam combines field analysis of volcanic deposits with statistical and numerical modelling approaches to understand the dynamics of explosive volcanic eruptions, particularly volcanic plumes and pyroclastic density currents. Engwell has been a COMET scientist since 2015.

Sam completed her PhD in 2013 at the University of Bristol. She then undertook a postdoc at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Pisa, Italy before moving to the BGS in 2015. Sam has collaborators around the world, including Italy, the US, Iceland and Indonesia. Engwell has advisory roles in ash aviation as co-chair of the World Meteorological Organisation Advisory Group on Volcanic Science for Aviation Applications and liaison between the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics and the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
