Sam Wimpenny

COMET Scientist: Earthquakes and Tectonics, Earth Observation
University of Bristol

Areas of Expertise: Fault Mechanics, Tectonics and Earthquakes

Sam Wimpenny is a geologist and geophysicist who studies the role of faults in controlling the geological evolution of Earth’s lithosphere.  His specialism is in using a wide range of observational techniques from geomorphology, satellite geodesy (InSAR, GPS), seismology, potential field analysis, paleoseismology and structural geology, and combining these observations with numerical modelling, to study the mechanics of both active and ancient fault zones. He has worked extensively with colleagues in Peru, China and India and has particular expertise in the active tectonics of the Andes.
