Measurement method(s):GPS - continuous
Duration of observation:1987 to present
Characteristics of deformation:

The Observatory Volcanologico Decepcion (OVD) was established by the Argentine Antarctic Institute, University of Buenos Aires and Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), Spain, to study and monitor Deception volcano. Ground monitoring activities take place in the summer of each year, when seismic, gas, deformation and additional monitoring is undertaken (Brown et al., 2015).

Prates et al. (2013) present deformation analysis between 2008-2013. Automated data acquisition and processing was collected using the global navigation satellite systems allow measurements of surface deformation in near real time. The authors show that although based on only three carefully located benchmarks, it is shown that Deception has been shortening and subsiding during these last 4 years. They conclude that “these changes cannot, however, be considered to indicate reactivation of this volcanic island, given its location in a tectonically complex and active region”.
