Observations of Deformation
Volcano number: | 311060 |
---|---|
Region: | Alaska |
Country: | United States |
Geodetic measurements? | Yes |
Deformation observation? | Yes |
Measurement method(s): | InSAR |
Duration of observation: | 2004 - 2010 |
Inferred cause(s) of deformation: | Surface deposits, Uncertain |
Characteristics of deformation: | Semisopochnoi island, encompassing Mount Cerebus, subsided suring th period 2004 – 2010. Maximum rates of ~1 cm/yr are observed at Mount Cerebus, with the rest of the island subsiding at lesser rates. Downward motion is thought to include a component of horizontal motion. Deformation is though to reflect thermoelastic contraction of lava flows, mechanical compaction and gravitational sliding. |
