Semisopochnoi

Observations of Deformation

Volcano number:311060
Region:
Country:United States
Geodetic measurements?Yes
Deformation observation?Yes
Measurement method(s):InSAR
Duration of observation:2004 - 2010
Inferred cause(s) of deformation:Surface deposits, Uncertain
Characteristics of deformation:

Semisopochnoi island, encompassing Mount Cerebus, subsided suring th period 2004 – 2010. Maximum rates of ~1 cm/yr are observed at Mount Cerebus, with the rest of the island subsiding at lesser rates. Downward motion is thought to include a component of horizontal motion. Deformation is though to reflect thermoelastic contraction of lava flows, mechanical compaction and gravitational sliding.
