Characteristics of deformation:

Lungdren and Lu (2006) analyzed RADARSAT-1 interferograms at Uzon caldera. They show that “from 2000 to 2003 approximately 0.15 m of inflation occurred at Uzon caldera, extending beneath adjacent Kikhpinych volcano. This contrasts with InSAR data showing no significant deformation during either the 1999 to 2000, or 2003 to 2004, time periods”.
The authors “source model is an irregularly shaped, pressurized crack, dipping ∼20° to the NW, 4 km below the surface”. The authors suggest the deformation is likely of hydrothermal origin, possibly driven by recharge of the magma chamber.
Pritchard and Simons present ERS-1 and -2 and RADARSAT data for northern Kamchatka between 1992 and 2003, although most volcanoes are only covered during the last three years. They state there is “possible inflation at Uzon caldera (see GSA Data Repository Item 2004139; see footnote 1)”. The authors observe inflation (maximum of ~1.5 cm/yr line of sight) but state that the “deformation at Uzon is less certain because of the lower coherence in the area and the existence of only a few measurements (making it harder to rule out atmospheric contamination)”.
The authors highlight that “a magma body has been inferred below the caldera at 5 km (Waltham, 2001)”, but their best fitting model sources lie at this depth or shallower (GSA Data Repository Item 2004139; see footnote 1).
The Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS FEB RAS) and Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) are responsible for monitoring volcanoes and providing aviation alerts.
